The History of Bergkvist Siljan

Bergkvist Siljan’s history is deeply rooted in the entrepreneurial tradition of Dalarna, Sweden. At the turn of the 20th century, the relocation of the Korsnäs sawmill to Gävle created new opportunities for private sawmills in the region. Siljanssågen was founded by Lake Siljan in Mora in 1897, and Bergkvist began its operations in Insjön in 1925.

Over the decades, Siljanssågen developed into a leading industrial player. In 1956, the company was acquired by Stockholms Trävaru to ensure a reliable supply of timber to Stockholm. Expansion continued through the 1960s with the addition of modern sawmill and planing facilities in Mora. Around the year 2000, the facility in Blyberg was established to process small-diameter timber, further strengthening the company’s processing capabilities.

The Insjön sawmill has grown steadily across four generations of the Bergkvist family. Founded by Axel Bergkvist in 1925 with support from international contacts and family investments, the company has continuously expanded its operations. Significant growth during the 1970s and 1980s, including the acquisition of Insjöns Sågverks AB, laid the foundation for future success. In the 1990s, revenues from Baltic operations enabled substantial investments, resulting in the state-of-the-art production facilities that define Bergkvist Siljan today.

With a strong heritage, modern technology, and a clear focus on sustainable forestry, Bergkvist Siljan continues to deliver high-quality wood products to customers worldwide.

The Importance of Logistics

Efficient logistics have been key throughout the company’s history. Early success relied on proximity to forests and log driving routes. Production facilities were strategically located near railways for customer deliveries. Today, the company owns the fifth largets containerterminal in Sweden, and the location in Insjön is crucial for exports to Asia, a rapidly growing market since 2010.

Focusing on sustainable logistics flows and specializing each production unit according to its unique strengths is a high priority — today, tomorrow, and in the future.

Our Operations

Forestry

Bergkvist Siljan operates three sawmills in Dalarna and has been a trusted partner to thousands of private forest owners in central Sweden for over 100 years.

As a purchaser of both standing and roadside timber, we carry out thinning and regeneration felling in cooperation with local contractors, fully complying with legal and certification standards. We also offer forest owners services such as advisory support, reforestation, management agreements, environmental certification, and forest management planning..

Swedish forestry has increased harvest volumes while also growing the total forest stock. We support active forest management that is tailored to each forest owner’s individual goals.

Sawmills

At our three state-of-the-art sawmills in Insjön, Blyberg, and Mora, we expertly saw and plane premium pine and spruce. We are committed to maximizing resource efficiency by utilizing every part of the log. By transforming sawdust, bark, and dry chips into renewable biofuels, we contribute to sustainable energy solutions for local heating plants and pellet production facilities. This integrated approach reflects our dedication to both quality and environmental responsibility.
